SHAC Minutes

Aug. 11, 2011

We reviewed our current member list. Michele King will no longer serve on the counsel. We appreciate her help over the past year. Vickie Dean will go on stand by status. She is prepared to support the SHAC as needed. Sarah Howard will be our student representative from the High School.  Ashley Williams is no longer with the McLennan County Health District. Her position is being filled by Margo Shanks.

It would be good at add another parent if possible. If anyone knows a parent who would be an asset to our SHAC and thinks they would be willing to serve let Pam White know. We will finalize our member list and get it ready to send to the School Board for their approval at the next scheduled meeting.

We reviewed the District Handbook policy on CISD’s abstinence program. It allows the subject on contraception in the curriculum only if it is presented with real life efficiency data and that abstinence is presented as the preferred choice. We reviewed the schedules for the HS and Jr. High Big Decision programs.

We discussed the plans for 6th grade to receive presentations on saying “no” and on healthy relationships. As well as human growth and development presentations for 4th and 5th grades.

We reviewed the criteria for the Reaching for Excellence Award and felt that CISD met the requirements of the application with the Big Decision program. The SHAC has submitted a letter of recommendation for the award.

Plans for the award money were discussed as this info needs to be included in the application.

We talked about including a guest speaker to talk about dating as one of the sessions in our Big Decision Program in the future. Lamar Collins is a dynamic speaker that reaches out on a level that the students identify with. The award money would cover the cost of 2 sessions one for HS and one for Jr. High.

Next meeting scheduled for Thursday Oct. 20th, 2011 at 4pm.

We applied for the Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health.

Connally ISD was awarded the “Reaching for Excellence Award”. CISD will receive a total of $1200 for “The Big Decision” program implemented in May of 2011.

We are very excited.  Award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Austin in January. Connally ISD would like to extend many thanks to Maria Solano and Samantha Gammel from AHEC for all their hard work. Implementing this program would not be possible with out the help and coordination efforts from them. We also want to thank all the other agencies that helped in the “Big Decision “effort at CISD.

We made plans for the Jr. High, Big Decision Program to kick off November 14th.

We are currently working with Tiffani Johnson from  McLennan County Health District conducting the SPAN (School physical activity and nutrition) survey on 4th, 8th, and 11th grades.

We are still waiting to hear from Family Health Center regarding the flu shot clinic for Connally ISD students.

Possible plans for Family Health Center’s Dental team to come and treat our elementary and primary students.
