GEARING UP to the College Link
During the fall, Connally ISD was among 22 area school districts that received the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant from the US Department of Education. GEAR UP seeks to raise student achievement, motivate students to take more challenging courses, increase graduation rates, and encourages them to attend college or a vocational program. This program will follow the current 6th and 7th graders through their first year in college.
Connally has already seized this opportunity and provided over 50 6th and 7th grade girls to attend the first Girl Genius STEM Conference at TSTC. The conference was held on Saturday, March 24th from 8:30-4, and it explored a variety of workshops that focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The girls enjoyed activities such as welding, being a pilot in a flight simulator, using their chemistry knowledge to create lip gloss, designing underwater robots, and much more.
Along with the STEM conference, the cohort of 6th and 7th graders are using the TI-nSpire CX calculators in their everyday math instruction. The calculators are able to be used to send questions to their handheld and receive immediate feedback. There are also activities where the students explore a variety of concepts.
TSTC is offering STEM academies this summer. Please click on the link below to see full explanations, dates, and application. Please note that the deadline for application is Friday, May 4th to the Junior High Front Office.
